Masters Degree in Mediation and Conflict Resolution

Alongside my practice I teach a Masters programme at University of Strathclyde.  The LLM/MSc in Mediation and Conflict Resolution started in 2010 and has provided a blend of academic learning and mediation practice to over 100 students.  Many are Scottish; some have come from as far afield as New Zealand, India, Ecuador, Nigeria and the Seychelles.

Chicago Mediation Competition

In 2018 I took three of our undergraduate students to the International Law Student Mediation Tournament at Loyola University, Chicago: http://www.inadr.org/  I was incredibly proud of April, Claire and Emma for finishing 10th out of over 50 teams from around the world.

Mediation Clinic

Thanks to the encouragement of some enthusiastic students I started University of Strathclyde Mediation Clinic.  The idea is to give these highly skilled and motivated postgrads opportunities to practice while also providing a free mediation service to people in our local area.  We started offering mediation at Glasgow Sheriff Court in 2014 and now provide mediation in 6 sheriff courts across West Central Scotland.  Last year these courts referred over 200 cases to the Clinic and over 80 were mediated.  https://www.strath.ac.uk/humanities/lawschool/mediationclinic/
What students have said about the course

"I found the course and its wide ranging curriculum incredibly stimulating. It provided a real challenge – in the best sense - to my thinking and above all, it demanded I open my mind to a whole new world of thought. The standard of teaching was excellent, and there was a very imaginative programme from visiting lecturers which really gave breadth and depth to our learning."
"I was positively challenged throughout the course and found it a really worthwhile learning experience. Since beginning my studies, I believe employers have looked favourably on me being able to demonstrate a deeper theoretical knowledge of mediation and conflict resolution along with the skills and experience that I have. The course has brought a new perspective to my practice and inspired my development."
"Through my studies on the MSc Mediation and conflict resolution, I have learned so much about the what, the why, the real in depth understanding of mediation and negotiation. All of our lecturers and guest lecturers have been absolutely outstanding. I feel so grateful, privileged and blessed to have been on the course."
